Civil law deals with areas of law that include defining and enforcing private or public rights, as opposed to criminal matters. Criminal Law tells of the rights and duties that exist between government and persons when person's rights are violated. Typically in a civil suit, one party (the plaintiff) will sue another party (the defendant) to make the party comply with a duty.
Criminal law is law that illustrates and governs actions that constitute crime. Usually wrongs committed against society for which society demands redress. Local, state and federal government statutes proscribe criminal acts.
